Integral Formation in the Catholic Classical Tradition

At St. Thomas More Academy, we believe that an education centered in the light and love of Christian Revelation, informed by the truth and beauty of the rich classical educational tradition, makes for the most powerful form of commonly available education to form intelligent, virtuous, and faithful children.

Classical Christian education was the primary form of education in nearly all Western Christendom until approximately 100 years ago. Education was always classical: it was rooted in Greek and Roman culture and philosophy, it was grown and transfigured by the medieval Christians, and it spread and blossomed in the renaissance and modern period. Now, classical Christian education is being rediscovered and renewed for us today.

A useful 3-part definition of classical Christian education can be found in Christopher Perrin’s book An Introduction to Classical Education:

Classical education is the authoritative, traditional, and enduring form of education begun by the Greeks and Romans, developed by the Church through history, and now being renewed and recovered in the twenty-first century.

Beginning in wonder, classical Christian education nurtures the intellectual, moral, aesthetic, spiritual, and physical capacities of students with a rich and ordered course for study grounded in the traditional seven liberal arts and leading through language, literature, history, mathematics, natural sciences, fine arts, and philosophy.

Premised on the pursuit of truth, goodness, and beauty, and governed by the lordship of Jesus Christ the Logos, classical Christian education aspires to transmit our inherited ecclesiastical and cultural endowment of wisdom, virtue, and excellence to successive generations, thus cultivating virtuous neighbors and citizens.

It is a great privilege for us at St. Thomas More Academy to initiate our students into this beautiful tradition and to contribute to the process of transmission that has endured across centuries.
